27 November 2011- It seems that the iOS and Android ‘battle’ is becoming similar to the Mac vs. PC battle as the same old debates beginning to rise. The main argument in the iOS’ favour would be that it’s more secure than Android and is certainly true to a point. As Apple insists on testing apps for the iOS, malware is mostly non-existent. While there may have been apps that slipped through, the system is largely foolproof.

Android, meanwhile, allows any app and side-apps to be downloaded which makes it an easy target for malware as users may unknowingly install it. Renowned security researcher Bruce Scheiner agrees, but says that the iOS may not stay safe for long. He believes that as more people use smartphones, it becomes an increasingly valuable resource for cyber criminals. While Google fights security concerns, Apple will have to make sure that Mobile Safari and webkit also stay secure.

The Nokia vice president Purnima Kochikar has jus released an open letter to developers, revealing the company's plans about their Symbian^3 platform. Apparently the Finns are planning to continue releasing new smartphones running on Symbian^3 as well as regular updates for the OS itself.

Those new devices should bring 1GHz+ CPUs and faster GPUs to Symbian^3. Kochikar also says that the company will make full use of its expertise in location-based services and imaging to make its new Symbian^3 smartphones more attractive.

Of course, it's the UI that's currently holding the Symbian lineup back, but Nokia plans to do something about that too. There are several updates that should dramatically improve user experience in the pipeline. The first one is pretty major, delivering a brand new home screen, new flexible widgets, new icons (pictured bottom), a faster browser, new Navbar and a fresh look and feel to Ovi Store and Ovi Maps, including integration of social media services in Ovi Maps.

That first update should come some time in the summer. In fact several of its components have already made their way to the Nokia C7 Astound that should hit T-Mobile US in a week.

Unfortunately, once again we didn't get the answer to the most important question - how long will the Symbian^3 support last? Apparently Nokia will only be able to answer this once they enter the WP7 market and see how things go there.

Still the company promised that it won't be dropping the Symbian^3 support immediately even if their first devices with the Microsoft turn out to be a huge success. Nokia says that it will be offering some support until the natural lifecycle of the Symbian^3 smartphones has ended in an attempt to convince users to switch to the WP7 after that.

On some markets such as China, India, Russia and Turkey, the Symbian^3 smartphone platform will continue to be marketed alongside Windows Phone 7.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc finally official

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc has just been officially unveiled. After the two extensive leaks yesterday this announcement hardly brings much new information that, but at least it confirms what we knew so far is true.

The curved Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc handset is merely 8.7mm thick at its slimmest part and packs a large 4.2" capacitive touchscreen of FWVGA (854 x 480 pixels) resolution, which Sony Ericsson call Reality display. A mineral glass is installed on top of the LCD screen to protect it from scratches, while the Bravia Engine Mobile should notably improve its image quality.

Running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the smartphone, previously known as Anzu, offers an 8 megapixel still camera with the new backlit Sony Exmor R sensor and 720p HD video recording capabilities. The f/2.4 aperture of the camera lens should improve the low-light performance of the XPERIA Arc camera even further. It's powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm CPU and has 512 MB of RAM. There will be an 8GB microSD card bundled with it so that should provide you with adequate storage out of the box.

On the connectivity end, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc offers 3g with HSDPA (depending on your region with dual-band or quad-band support), quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth and a microUSB port. The microHDMI port allows you to share you pictures and videos on an external monitor in HD resolution. Naturally, there is also a 3.5mm audio jack on board.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc will be available in late Q1 or early Q2 in Midnight Blue and Misty Silver. There is no information about the pricing of the device though.

Highest Credit to: www.gsmarena.com

The Tab has landed - the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab tablet just went official, confirming many of its rumored specs. The 7" tablet has full voice call functionality, up to 7 hours of video playback, DivX and Flash videos included and the excellent Android web browser that has plenty of room to stretch its legs on the WSVGA screen.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is centered around a 7" TFT screen with 1024x600 pixels resolution, driven by a Cortex-A8 processor running at 1GHz, 512MB RAM and PowerVR SGX540 graphics.

The OS running the show is Android 2.2 Froyo, of course, but without the TouchWiz skin. Samsung have concentrated on providing and excellent app package instead.

The Tab has GSM/GPRS/EDGE along with HSPA-enhanced 3G connectivity. Both for voice and data, SMS and MMS too. It even has a front-facing 1.3MP camera for video calls. On the back, there's a second camera - a 3MP auto-focus snapper with LED flash.

The Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab is big for a phone but compact for a 7" tablet, it measures 190.1 x 120.5 x 11.98mm and weighs 380g. The reduced weight compared to the iPad is in part due to the smaller size and because the Tab has a plastic body.

There are two options for the built-in memory - 16GB or 32GB, which is expandable using microSD cards up to 32GB. The connectivity of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is rounded off by Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n and an Apple-like 30 pin data connector.

And an HDMI will come in handy - the extensive video codec support (DivX, XviD, H.264, Flash 10.1 too) and the 4000 mAh battery that has enough juice for up to 7 hours of movies. The tab handles HD resolutions with ease too.

Samsung have added the Readers Hub, which boasts access to 2 million books and thousands of magazines and newspapers, joining on the tablet assault on eReaders. If the apps that come preloaded on the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab aren't enough, you have full access to the Android market. We're not sure whether most apps there would be fit for the Tab's 1024x600 pixel resolution.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab will launch in Europe in mid-September (Italy first) and expand to the US, Asia and Korea in the months to follow.

Eldar Murtazin from mobile-review.com posted a preview of the Nokia C7. The handset obviously takes the N8 base, but uses a cheaper body (plastic rather than anodized aluminum) and cuts down a few features . The major cut is the camera - 8MP and LED flash vs. the 12MP camera with xenon flash on the N8.

HDMI is also gone and the internal memory has been halved to 8GB. The rest of it is the same - 3.5" nHD AMOLED, 680MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, 1200mAh Li-Ion battery and of course Symbian^3. The Nokia C7 also supports the latest local wireless connectivity - Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 (which hit 10Mbit/s during testing).

Eldar Murtazin estimates that the Nokia C7 will be available in mid-October or November for 350 euro (based on the announced 370 euro price of the N8 with actual prices of around 450 euro for pre-order)

Today Nokia announced their first handset to pack a touchscreen and a regular alphanumeric keypad simultaneously. Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is also the first S40 touch-driven device to get a global release.

The unusual handset leaked last week and most of the specs that were made available back then got confirmed today. Despite its low standing in the food chain, the Nokia X3-02 packs excellent connectivity with WLAN (including the new N standard), 3G with HSPA, Bluetooth and microUSB all on board. The music fans will also appreciate the 3.5mm audio jack.

The Nokia X3-02 touchscreen measures 2.4" in diagonal and sports QVGA resolution. This is one of the smallest touchscreens on the market so we really hope that Nokia did a good job of optimizing the interface.

The final noteworthy feature of the 9.6mm slim device is its 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera that is also capable of recording video.
Here's a promo video, which shows glimpses of the UI in action:

German Stiftung Warentest: iPhone 4 is the real signal loser

The popular German foundation Stiftung Warentest, which is the regional authority on consumer product testing accommodated the recently unveiled Apple iPhone...

The popular German foundation Stiftung Warentest, which is the regional authority on consumer product testing accommodated the recently unveiled Apple iPhone 4 in its lab and tested its notorious antenna performance. And no-one will be surprised to hear that the iPhone 4 failed to impress the guys who tested it.

According to the Stiftung Warentest, only a touch of a finger over the antenna gap in the bottom left corner is enough for the iPhone 4 to lose up to 90 percent of the signal. And, depending on the strength of thе network signal, that can easily lead to dropped calls. As for web browsing, Internet connection gets "painfully" slow when you position your hand over the soft spot.

The foundation repeated the test using two other smartphones (those remain undisclosed, though) and this time the signal went down by only 25 percent. So, even if those two were affected by signal reception issues, their reception was still good enough to prevent dropped calls.

So, as it turns out, Apple is right: other devices lose signal as well. But what about the dropped calls? Nope, the Antennagate saga ain't over yet.

Nokia 5250 appears in public, stays mum on specs

A slip by the Ovi-supporting team today revealed a new touch-driven Nokia handset that is in the works. Nokia 5250 appeared on the company's application store website, flaunting a fresh new design, but unfortunately the handset is running on the good old Symbian S60 5th edition OS. Those of you hoping for an Symbian^3 device in the low-end segment are sadly out of luck.

The handset is obviously the next member of Nokia's family of lower midrange touchscreen phones and comes to replace the pretty popular Nokia 5230. There is not much specs about the Nokia 5250 that we can confirm. Perhaps an nHD screen measuring somewhere around 3 inches in diagonal certainly isn't a wild guess. 3G and GPS are on the cards as well but the rest is pure guesswork.
This February Nokia promised to deliver 100 euro touch smartphones and we have yet to see those. Could the Nokia 5250 be the first to go near that psychological barrier? In any case with the Nokia 5250 appearing on the Ovi store page it's clear that its announcement is fast approaching so we won't have to wait too long to find out.
